I have just read The China Study and am convinced. I am very healthy and fit with a cholesterol level well above 200. I'd like to hear some success (or failure) stories before or as I embark on my newest attempt to break free of Lipitor.
Also; on my last nutrition pursuit, The Primitive Diet (it didn't work), I learned carbohydrate intense diets were detrimental in many ways. Do vegans worry about too many carbs?

Steven, I am new at this whole plant based diet too, but from what I have learned when you say carbohydrates it is good to specify the kind of carbs. There are many carbohydrates available that are processed to the point that they do not help achieve the results desired compared to eating whole plant foods that are less processed.
According to the book "The China Study" (chapter 12 in particular)it is stated that there is no danger of overeating with a true plant based diet, and all needed nutrients are provided in a diet that contains the many fruit, legumes, grains, and leafy veggies available.
I am working on my cholesterol numbers too, among other issues, I am around 202 according to my Dr. I hope the next test will be much different.

Marc,
I appreciate your interest in this. How is your new regimen going. Did you pursue the diet? I'm looking for someone succeeding at this that says it works and is doable. Quality food is quite enjoyable to me, but I have not launched into the vegan ism yet. Thanks' for responding, and the best of luck!

Steve, In you post you state, "I am very healthy and fit with a cholesterol level well above 200. "Also; on my last nutrition pursuit, The Primitive Diet (it didn't work), I learned carbohydrate intense diets were detrimental in many ways. Do vegans worry about too many carbs?" you may want to look into Dr. Graham's 80/10/10 diet, I just started this 3 weeks ago, it is more strick than vegan, but I have found I feel amazing on this simple diet (but cholesterol isn't a problem for me)- check out youtube for videos of other people on the diet, hey you never know...

I tried to respond but it seems to have gone into Cyberspace, so here goes again. My family switched to a whole foods plant based diet following me when I developed a nasty reaction to a medication that almost killed me. We have done it exclusively for 2 years, but were close before that. My husbands cholesterol pre WFPB diet was 185 HDLs 39. His internist was not worried. After less than a year on the diet, he rechecked it and it was 145 with HDL of 68. BIG difference. We attend a raw foods potluck and many have had similar results. Cholesterols going from > 250 to 130s, a friend went from 190 to 120s. Yes it works. if you follow it properly, no added oils! don't overdo the nuts. I like the RAVE diet book and companion DVD Eating for more about the diet specifically. ravediet.com

Hi. After reading the China Study about 2 years ago, I have changed my diet several times, in an attempt to get my total cholesteroal levels down. I started at 200, then, 169, then 205, then 193, then 179, then 181, then 176 last month. I can't seem to get under the magic 150 that some recommend. This whole time I have excluded dairy and meat. Occasionally I have had seafood. At first I ate anything plant-based, including olive oil, avacados, and nuts. But when I got the 200 number, I realized these high fat plant based foods could be a problem, so I have eliminated them. My husband says nobody could be more disciplined than I am about my diet. But it doesn't seem to be helping. The last couple of months I have been exercising more, thinking that it may take more than diet to get low cholesterol for me. I am thinking about using Red Yeast Rice, which some say is helpful. Maybe I'll add in meditation also, as Ornish suggests. Anyone have an suggestions?

My chronically high cholesterol has dropped from 273 to 166 (so far) without medication. I have not been super-strict about limiting oils or whole foods, but I hope to improve in that area. In addition to a plant-based diet with mostly whole foods, I also drink a soy protein shake every day with added ground flax. The diet in combination with the soy and flax seem to do it for me. I'm very happy about it - and God willing, I hope to continue on the China Study nutrition plan permanantly.
